A common assumption is that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are crack troops and highly professional. They're not. Their performance against Hezbollah in Lebanon revealed what a rabble many of them are. The basic problem is that their experience in the last 20 years has largely been against unarmed Palestinians in situations where nothing they do will receive any condemnation or sanction (apart from bodies they serially disregard, such as the Palestinian Authority and the United Nations). Brutality is the only tactic they've learned how to use - and then only against unarmed civilians. It's not particularly surprising that this was the first tactic chosen out on the high seas.
